York County Alliance for Learning Hosts Career Education and Work Standards Symposium


YORK, PA – February 22, 2017 – The York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) recently hosted their 7th Annual Career Education and Work Standards Symposium on February 16th.  The event was held at York County School of Technology and was attended by over 170 K-12 Educators from across York County. 


The event’s keynote speaker was Tom Scholles, Director of Human Resources from Utz Quality Foods.  Mr. Scholles discussed some of the key traits that Utz and other leading companies are looking for from the emerging workforce.  Attendees then moved into breakout sessions by their grade levels and observed four sample lesson presentations by their peers on the topics of Career Awareness and Preparation, Career Acquisition, Retention and Advancement, and Entrepreneurship.  


At the end of the evening, the group gathered for an Employability and Work Standards Panel Discussion which included Kevin Appnel (York County Alliance for Learning), Sarah Lanphier (Nuts About Granola), Tom Scholles (Utz Quality Foods), Kevin Schreiber (York County Economic Alliance), and Vaughn Silar (Paragon Engineering).  Topics included career exploration, job trends, local employment opportunities, YCAL’s upcoming Pre-Apprenticeship program, and post-secondary opportunities.
