Career Exploration Programs Series

YCAL’s Career Exploration Programs are programs that provide York County high school sophomores, juniors and seniors hands-on experience, preparation and guidance for their future careers. Most programs meet after school on a consistent basis and focuses on a career pathway. Business representatives attend each meeting and guide students by answering questions and monitoring progress.  A culminating project is featured at the end of each program to showcase the knowledge gained throughout the program.  

Career Exploration Day Programs

YCAL also offers a growing variety of one or two-day Career Exploration Programs designed to provide students with an introductory view of a particular industry.  These abridged programs are typically held during the school day and are usually held at a sponsoring company's location.  These programs are a great way for students to gain a general understanding of different career paths in a more condensed amount of time.

Sponsor Program Name Description
Accounting Students will gain insight to how their personal communication style and preferences apply in a public accounting environment. They will also have the opportunity to ask questions to help solidify their interest in the accounting field and better understand practical applications of an accounting career.
Agriculture This program highlights sustainable farming practices, ecology and greenhouses. Students will have the opportunity to learn about different farming styles, new innovations, and business models and explore different paths to a future in farming. Students will perform two hands-on labs that will help them further understand some of the day-to-day activities of this career field.
Business Administration & Sales High School students interested in exploring a career in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating business functions essential to efficient and productive business operations will not want to miss this one-day session. In addition to exploring various aspects of a successfully functioning business, students will also the opportunity to explore the sales process from business development to the close, to service after the sale. Students will have the opportunity to interact with various staff from this successful local business.
Creative Careers Creativity, imagination and problem solving are crucial 21st century skills needed in the knowledge-based economy. Creative York's Creative Careers Program seeks to better prepare the next generation of thought leaders, innovators and workforce of our community. Note: This course is not just for artists…it is for people who like art, the creative process AND students with interests and career goals that may go beyond the art world.
Criminal Justice & Forensics Are you interested in exploring a career where you can make a major difference? Careers in Criminal Justice and Forensics extend far beyond being a police officer, there are many individuals who support the efforts of the police and attorneys working in the justice system. This one-day event will provide high school students with a background on the industry, potential career paths, and the education required to pursue the path that may interest them.
Education High School students interested in pursuing the noble profession of passing on knowledge to others as an Educator can look forward to a day of exploring a day in the life of a teacher. Attendees will get to speak to a professor, have a Q & A with current students, and observe a class.
Engineering Students who are math and science-driven, showing an interest in how things work, will want to take advantage of this opportunity. Students attending can look forward to exploring more about the engineering industry, educational paths, and career options after completing their studies. Attendees will have the opportunity to preview an introductory college course and explore the lab facilities provided to students as well as engage with engineering faculty at Penn State York.
Entrepreneurship Are you interested in starting your own business someday? If so, this is the program for you! Join other students from York County for challenging informational sessions from which you will form teams to prepare for a business plan competition. This program is available to Juniors and Seniors only.
Financial Services This program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the world of financial services, such as working in a credit union, bank, or other institutions that manage clients’ money. Students can look forward to a tour of a credit union along with opportunities to interact with executives and other employees of a financial institution.
Healthcare Do you have a desire to help and care for others? If so, a position in the field of Healthcare may be in your future. This program will explore several potential career paths in the field of Healthcare that may require a 2-year or 4-year degree after High School. If you have any interest in working in this field but have not committed to a specific course of study, this is a great program to check out! This program is presented by the departmental faculty of Central Penn College in partnership with Normandie Ridge, an Albright Care Services Retirement Living Community.
Hospitality Management Are you aware that the hospitality industry is one o fthe largest in the country? This program will provide you with a fun, hands-on learning approach to the various career paths and education required to work in hotels, restaurants, catering, golf courses, senior-living facilities, sports teams, resorts, and many other industries related to service.
Human Services The Human Services Career Exploration Program is a 2-Part program that helps students gain insight into human service careers. Completion of this program will give them a clearer picture of the struggles facing many community members, expand their knowledge of services available to York County residents, and learn about the departments in the York County Human Services Division. Students can look forward to two after-school and on-site sessions to explore this career path.
Information Technology Students interested in a career working with computers, technology, and networks will want to check out this monthly program in information technology. This program includes discussions and hands on demonstrations on topics that build linkages from high school into the Information Technology (IT) field. Students will learn about security, programming, hardware maintenance, and multimedia usage. Students will also get to tour a local IT firm and hear from industry practitioners who apply this coursework on a daily basis.
Insurance This interactive program will open your eyes to the insurance industry. There are many Careers in insurance that include: Underwriting, Claims, Sales, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Customer Service, Accounting/Finance and many more. This program offers a mentoring aspect as students learn of the many opportunities and facets of the insurance industry from an agency owner with nearly 30 years of experience.
Insurance Careers Day Event - Insurance is a financial service that guarantees protection or safety to individuals, organizations and businesses. The insurance industry offers many career choices including Actuarial Sciences, Claims, Sales and Underwriting.
Law Do you want to be a lawyer, work within a law firm, or work in the legal system for the government? Then do not miss this opportunity! This program will allow you to learn more about the practice of law, real estate closings, legal research and more.
Manufacturing Careers When you think of Manufacturing do you think of a dirty environment with low-wage workers? Nothing could be further from the truth! Modern manufacturing is done in a clean environment with many highly-skilled workers contributing to the many aspects of the manufacturing process from design, production, and the quality-control that is implemented every step of the way. With TWICE the national average of employees working in Manufacturing, York is the home of many cutting-edge facilities. Students attending this day will get to learn about several different manufacturing facilities in York County directly from a company representative. This will be an interactive session so students should come prepared to ask questions and network!
Marketing Are you a business-minded student who likes to be creative? Do you ever come up with great ideas that you want to share with the world? If you answered “maybe” or “sort of” to any of these questions, join us for a special one-day event focusing on the world of marketing.
Mechatronics Students attending this program will learn about the rapidly-growing Mechatronics and Industrial Controls Technology field. Electronics, mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics and computer control systems are being integrated to create new and improved automated manufacturing production systems. Students with an interest in pursuing a career in electronics, robotics, maintenance, manufacturing, engineering, or automation will definitely want to check out this one-day program.
Media Careers For high school students who enjoy the idea of being involved in various forms of media, this program has it all. Radio broadcasting and production, Sports broadcasting, newspaper writing, advertising, media sales, news production...this jam-packed day is going to have it all. Students will visit multiple locations in York to experience multiple broadcast venues.
Medical Assistant Students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field can look forward to experiencing the basics of being a Medical Assistant through this program. This program will cover phlebotomy, taking vitals, EKG’s and urinalysis.
Music Industry Do you enjoy listening to music? Have you ever listened to recorded or live music and wanted to know more about how it all happened? If you have ever had an interest in the music industry, this one-day career exploration is an exciting opportunity. Whether you are interested in performance, production, or just the music business in general, this hands-on program, presented by York-based Studio 117, will provide an introduction to familiarize you with several opportunities in the industry.
Nursing For students pursuing a career in the medical field, this one-day program will help to gain a better understanding of the education required and the finer aspects of being a nurse. Nurses perform many jobs such as providing and coordinating patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members, and even assisting surgeons in the operating room.
Respiratory Care This one-day program provides an overview of a growing specialty field in the healthcare industry. Students who attend can look forward to an overview of the types of jobs that can be attained in this career path as well as an understanding of the type of work performed.
Skilled Trades Students interested in exploring a career in a skilled trade such as carpentry, iron working, or highway/bridge construction will not want to miss this program! Hosted by the Kinsley Education Center, students can look forward to learning about the opportunities, types of work, standards, and skill sets required to be successful in a leading company like Kinsley. Students will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Pre-Apprenticeship Program in Construction that YCAL and Kinsley offer to Junior applicants to complete during their Senior Year.
Sports Management Would you like to learn about the interesting career opportunities in the growing field of sport management? This fun, hands-on program will show you the career paths available in sport industry. We will share with you the education and training necessary to work in areas like professional sports, college athletics, sports marketing, and community sports and fitness.
Transportation & Logistics Transportation, Distribution and Logistics is the planning, management, and movement of people, materials, and goods by road, pipeline, air, rail and water and related professional support services (such as transportation, infrastructure planning and management, logistics services, mobile equipment and facility maintenance). Students who may be interested in manufacturing and/or business-related careers will not want to miss this program, which is hosted by a locally-based, and nationally-recognized manufacturer of snack foods, distributing products made in Central Pennsylvania and shipped all throughout the United States!
